Graphcore machine learning startup already at “advanced stage”
Graphcore Ltd. (Bristol, England), a startup company that is developing a specialized processor and accelerator systems hardware for machine learning applications, is already at an “advanced stage,” according to a source close to the company.
Graphcore (see Machine-learning processor startup born in Bristol) has been seed funded within XMOS but developed its technology completely separately from XMOS, the source said. The technology is centered around a neural network accelerator called the intelligent processor unit (IPU) which Simon Knowles, previously CTO of XMOS, has been working on for some time, the source said. Knowles has now taken up the CTO position at Graphcore.
The IPU supports massively parallel, low-precision floating-point arithmetic to provide higher compute density than other solutions, the company claims on its website. The IPU is backed up by a set of software tools and libraries that are designed to integrate with leading machine-learning development frameworks.
Graphcore has now been spun out of XMOS and is completely independent and at an “advanced stage with a full team already in place” the source said.
Notably, while startup Graphcore would appear to be focused on board-level hardware for machine learning acceleration in servers another Bristol startup, FiveAI, appears to be developing machine-learning software for autonomous vehicles (see Icera team forms machine-learning ADAS startup).
