The set of standards includes, among others, radio frequencies and data formats. The European standard bodies collaborated closely with their counterparts in North America and Japan to ensure global compatibility. With more than 200 million vehicles on Europe’s roads today, experts expect a noticeable positive effect on travel safety if more than 10 % of the vehicles are mutually connected.

Work is underway in both standard entities to develop release 2 which will include the communication between vehicles and roadside infrastructure such as traffic signs and traffic lights.

The development of these standards has been assigned to ETSI and CEN by the European Commission in 2009. The EC also funded several research projects such as eCoMove, Drive C2X and COMeSafety. The US Department of Transport recently also gave green light to the development of Car2X standards.
