Groupe PSA, Qualcomm test C-V2X for communication between vehicles
One of the experimental objectives is to test C-V2X technology as a first step on the road to deploying 5G in automotive applications with direct communication between vehicles. PSA and Qualcomm have joined forces under the 3rd Generation Partnership Program (3GPP) to test C-V2X technology in the 5.9 GHz band. This technology is intended for intelligent transport systems (ITS) and communication over the networks of commercial telecommunications providers.
The In&Out event on digital mobility, which will take place in March 2018 in Rennes, will be the first V2X demonstration of the two companies in France. There, PSA vehicles with C-V2X technology will be presented that use the Qualcomm 9150 C V2X chipset and the manufacturer’s corresponding reference platform. Specific applications will be used to show how C-V2X technology supports the functions of modern driver assistance systems. It will demonstrate how vehicles can communicate with each other without interruption in order to warn each other of potential dangers at the roadside, slow-moving vehicles or vehicles with a breakdown, for example.
The development of C-V2X uses 5G new radio (NR) features that provide high throughput, ultra-low latency, high reliability and broadband carrier support for demanding autonomous driving applications, including intent sharing and 3D-HD card updates.
“C-V2X has significant global momentum and has broad ecosystem support, so it is expected to emerge as a V2X technology,” said Carla Gohin, senior vice president and head of innovation at Groupe PSA.
