Fixed disks for automotive use differ significantly from their counterparts designed for computer or stationary consumer use. All electronic parts – and thus, also data storage – designed to be installed in cars, have to meet strict robustness requirements. For example, the Endurastar J4K320 from HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, now a subsidiary of Western Digital) accommodates up to 320 GB of data, roughly 220% more than its predecessor. It operates in the entire temperature range from -30°C through 85°C and withstands mechanical shocks of up to 300 g during 2 ms during operation and even up to 800 g (for 1 ms) when switched off.

It also is capable of operating in altitudes of up to 5.500 metres (about 18.000 ft). This is owed to HGST’s Thermal Fly-height Control System (TFC) which compensates the distance variations between the write-read head caused by variations of the ambient temperature and the altitude. The J4K320 is available with several capacities between 80 GB and 320 GB, rotates at 4260 rpm and communicates through a SATA interface. Its standardized 2.5" form factor facilitates its integration into most environments.
