Hella brings 77GHz radar sensors into series passenger car
Hella had already brought its 77GHz radar sensors into series production for the first time in the spring of last year. At that time it was a truck manufacturer; now an order is following in the passenger car sector with probably much higher quantities. In addition, this is a further developed version of the sensor. Moreover, Hella is already developing the second 77GHz radar generation, which will go into series production for another German premium manufacturer in 2024.
“With our 77GHz radar sensors, we are continuing to drive the trend towards automated driving,” says Björn Twiehaus, who as a member of the Hella Management Board is responsible for the Electronics Division. “By using highly efficient hardware and smart software, we are taking radar-based 360-degree environment perception to the next level and are thus drivers for safe mobility.”
Especially with a view to functions such as autonomous parking or automated lane changes, 77GHz technology is becoming increasingly important, as it offers a significantly larger signal bandwidth compared to 24GHz and thus improved environmental resolution. This makes it easier to detect and classify objects on the road.
Hella uses a system chip based on RF-CMOS semiconductor technology for its 77GHz radar sensors. Thanks to the special architecture, digital components as well as systems for self-diagnosis can be integrated on the chip in addition to the components for transmitting and receiving. The Hella radar sensors are also based on a modular, scalable platform concept. This means they support different vehicle architectures and interfaces such as Ethernet. Customer-specific requirements as well as current and future NCAP requirements can thus be implemented flexibly and efficiently.
According to Hella, the company is continuing to work on increasing the performance of the radar sensors. The second generation 77GHz is characterised in particular by the use of the latest antenna and chip technologies. This increases the range once again, extends the field of vision and further improves the measuring capability at close range. Objects such as trucks, cars, two-wheelers and pedestrians can be detected and tracked more precisely in this way, which ultimately leads to more informed decision-making rules, for example when initiating a lane change or parking. It also allows the location and height of even smaller objects, such as kerbs and roadside posts, to be determined more accurately.
