The customer project includes two vehicle series. The first has recently been started, the second is planned for the end of the year. “Intelligent lighting functionalities, such as glare-free high beam, which is already widespread in the premium segment, are also increasingly becoming standard in the volume segment, comments Frank Huber, the member of the Hella Management Board responsible for the global lighting business.  “This is making automotive lighting technology more demanding, because numerous lighting and electronic components have to be integrated and coordinated with each other, says Huber.

Hella presented its “Light Design” approach in the middle of last year. Here, all lighting and electronic components for complex lighting systems can be put together according to a modular principle, which are then integrated into a complete system by the manufacturer. The first customer project includes a matrix headlamp with 24 individually controllable LEDs, which is produced at the plant of the Chinese lighting joint venture Hella BHAP Sanhe Automotive Lighting, as well as lighting electronics and level sensors, which come off the production line at the electronics plant in Shanghai. In addition, a front camera including the corresponding image processing software is integrated into the overall system. The complex system solution was developed within about one and a half years in cooperation between the lighting and electronics divisions of Hella.

Hella did not reveal the name of the Chinese OEM, as is usual in such cases.
