Here launches sensor-based real-time traffic data service
Here intends to provide access to this Open Location Platform data pool also for other car vendors as well as from service providers. These third parties will also be enabled to contribute their own data and thus increase data quality. The data will be anonymized before they are processed. Among others, Swedish automotive OEM Volvo has introduced a similar cloud-based service for its customers. Past year, Audi, BMW and Daimler jointly bought Here from telecommunications equipment provider Nokia to create an online platform for the real-time, high precision street maps required for automated driving.
When the new Here service will start, several hundred thousands cars will provide their sensor data. Here expects that the number of participants will grow rapidly to reach the mark of one million. The service will start in Europe to be expanded to North America “quickly”, the company said without however providing details.
The Open Location Platform will store and process data including speed, driving direction and position; rapid decrease of speed which hints to braking sharply; construction sites, road closures, hazardous road conditions detected by rain sensors and ESP activities in the car, activity of fog headlights and hazard flashers, permanent and temporary speed limits and road signs in general, detected by the front cameras.
In addition, the data service also provides information on the parking situation in the target area of the vehicle. This service will be based on GPS data, vehicle sensor data and other sources such as municipal traffic and parking data.
