High efficiency blue fluorescent material made in Korea
Established in 2014, Material Science’s researchers have developed a blue ‘dopant’ which they say can be mixed with other OLED host materials to improve the efficiency and lifespan of OLEDs.
Until now, ETnews reports, Samsung Display and LG Display have been purchasing blue materials from Japanese chemical company Idemitsu Kosan, leader in the development of blue material for OLEDs and holding many broad-encompassing patents on the compounds used and their manufacture.
Material Science was able to circumvent Idemitsu’s patents by creating novel molecules with a new synthesis method implementing dark blue materials with low electronegativity. The new compounds are being evaluated by several panel manufacturers. Next the company wants to develop a blue host for its blue dopant, so has to become a prominent OLED materials manufacturer.
Material Science’s revenues mostly come from the HTL (Hole transport Layer) and ETL (Electron Transport Layer) materials it sells to Chinese OLED panel manufacturers. The company made $5.85 million in sales in 2016 and is expecting to make $8.86 million this year, according to ETnews.
