How Covid-19 will hit the opto, sensors, discrete markets
These markets are expected to recover this lost revenue and add a little more in 2021.
Market research firm IC Insights was expecting single-digit market growth in 2020 for optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete semiconductors (OSD) but has trimmed its forecast by 10 percent due to the pandemic.
IC Insight said it is working on the assumption that the virus will be contained by the middle of 2020 and that the market will gradually improve in the 2H20 and into 2021.

Total OSD sales are now expected to drop to $80.9 billion in 2020, a 6.4 percent drop from $86.1 billion in 2019 with sales now set to rise 8.9 percent in 2021 to a combined total of $88.1 billion.
Optoelectronics sales were $44.1 billion in 2019 but are expected to reduce by 5.4 percent to $41.7 billion in 2020. The sensors and actuators revenue taken together was $14.9 billion in 2019 but will fall by 4.7 percent to $14.2 billion. The discrete semiconductor market was worth $27.1 billion in 2019 and will be down 7.7 percent at $25.0 billion in 2020.
IC Insights expects optoelectronics and sensors/actuators sales to rebound by about 10% in 2021, reaching new record highs of $45.8 billion and $15.7 billion, respectively. Discretes sales are projected to grow 7% in 2021 to $26.7 billion but will not set a new record high until 2022.
