Fifty one percent of smartphone shipments are now 4G growing from 48% in 2015.

Forward Concepts has also produced its view of who the top smartphones suppliers were in 2016 with a top ten ranked thus:

Samsung         : 21.0 percent

Apple               : 15.1 percent

Huawei            :   9.0 percent

Oppo               :   6.4 percent

Vivo/Vsun       :   4.8 percent

LG                    :   4.2 percent 

Xiaomi             :   4.0 percent

Lenovo             :   3.8 percent

ZTE                  :   3.7 percent

Alcatel (TCL)   :   2.6 percent

The fastest growing brands were Oppo, LeEco, Lava, Vivo, Gionee and Transsion.

The supply of baseband processors and modems – both integrated and separate, was led by Qualcomm with 59 percent by value and MediaTek with 23 percent by value. Although Intel’s modem chips achieved only a small market share in 2016 it is expected to leap in 2017 as they have been designed into some of Apple’s iPhone 7. Qualcomm has the other part of the iPhone 7 modem shipments.
