Huawei launches 7nm ARM server processor
The move follows on from Huawei’s announcement last August of the Kirin 980 as an application processor for smartphones, which it claimed was the first processor to make use of 7nm manufacturing technology (see China claims 7nm chip lead with Kirin 980).
Huawei said its latest chip is intended to operate in servers in big data and distributed storage applications and also announced the TaiShan series servers powered by Kunpeng 920. The series includes three models: one with a focus on storage, another on high density, and a third focused on balancing both requirements.
Huawei claimed that Kunpeng 920 is the industry’s highest-performance ARM-based server processor chip. The CPU was designed by Huawei based on an ARMv8 architecture license and achieves higher performance at lower power consumption than processors from competitors, Huawei said. At a typical clock frequency, the Kunpeng 920 CPU scores over 930 in the SPECint Benchmarks test, which is 25 percent higher than the industry benchmark. At the same time, power efficiency is 30 percent better than that offered by industry counterparts.
William Xu, chief strategy marketing officer at Huawei, said that despite working with ARM on the Kunpeng 920, Huawei wanted to maintain good relations with Intel.

Huawei and Intel will continue our long-term strategic partnerships and continue to innovate together,” he said. However, he added: “At the same time, the ARM industry is seeing a new development opportunity. We will work with global partners in the spirit of openness, collaboration, and shared success to drive the development of the ARM ecosystem and expand the computing space, and embrace a diversified computing era.”
