So far, most electric vehicles use a voltage of 400V for propulsion. Only a few premium battery-electric models and sports cars have an 800V architecture. Among the latters is the E-GMP electric car platform of the Hyundai Motor Group, which was presented only a few weeks ago. This translates into several benefits for drivers of electric vehicles: the doubled voltage significantly shortens the charging time of the battery. In less than twenty minutes, the battery should be able to be charged to 80%, depending on its capacity. In addition, the 800V on-board network enables a higher power output.

Vitesco Technologies uses semiconductors made of silicon carbide for the 800-volt inverter, which significantly increase the energy efficiency. Only this technology allows the full potential of the high-voltage architecture to be realised while at the same time maximising efficiency. With its new E-GMP platform, Hyundai is underlining its intention to launch a total of 23 battery-powered models by 2025, 11 of which will be exclusively battery-powered, and to sell more than one million vehicles in this drive category worldwide.

For Vitesco, the major order for the 800V inverter is a confirmation of its electrification strategy to date and underlines its forward-looking approach as the supplier of choice for e-mobility solutions, explained Thomas Stierle, head of Vitesco’s Electrification Technology business unit. Therefore, the company is pushing the development and optimisation of further key components for 800-volt-based electric vehicles – from DC/DC converters to battery management – to charging systems.
