Hyundai Mobis to acquire stake in Lidar pioneer Velodyne
Hyundai Mobis will integrate its cognitive software into Velodyne’s latest lidar sensors. Velodyne is considered one of the pioneers in lidar solutions and applications for autonomous vehicles. Its all-round scanners are considered the “gold standard” in the industry, but insiders say they are only suitable for prototyping and R&D activities. For series production, they are said to be far too expensive at a price roughly equivalent to that of a compact car.
In 2017, the company launched the VLS-128 system. In December 2018, Nikon Corporation invested $25 million in the company. Hyundai Mobis regards the development of driver assistance systems as one of the most important future technology focus areas and last year presented its growth plan, according to which future sales of future technologies should reach the equivalent of eight and a half billion euros by 2025.
