
I/O module handles CAN, CANopen and CANopen FD
Working with Embedded Systems Academy (EmSA), PEAK-System in Germany has developed an I/O module that supports CAN, CANopen and CANopen FD (flexible data).
Licenses can be purchased on the EmSA website, each of which is valid for one PCAN-MicroMod FD module. Activation is done online via Windows software using an activation code. The user can then switch freely between the CAN/CAN FD, CANopen, and CANopen FD operating modes.
EDS files are available for download for all PCAN-MicroMod FD products to configure the CANopen or CANopen FD functionality. Furthermore, the PCAN-MicroMod FD Evaluation Board is now delivered with a free license.
The dual capability is needed as while Classical CAN and CAN FD protocols are backward compatible, CAN nodes destroy a consumed CAN FD frame by means of an error frame as it has a larger packet size of 64 bytes rather than 8 bytes.
The PEAK-System module board has CAN and CAN FD connection on the one side and various physical inputs and outputs on the other side. The logical linking of both sides is handled by an NXP LPC54618 microcontroller to integrate I/O functionality with CAN connection into their project.
In addition to simple I/O mapping to CAN IDs, function blocks are also available for processing the data. The configuration created on the computer is transferred via the CAN bus to the PCAN-MicroMod FD which then runs as an independent CAN node. Multiple modules can be configured independently on a CAN bus.
For the PCAN-MicroMod FD, a ready-to-use motherboard in an aluminium housing and an evaluation board are also available. All PCAN-MicroMod FD products can alternatively be operated with CANopen firmware.
