IAR Systems adds ARM R52 support for Renesas chips
IAR Systems in Sweden is supporting the latest Renesas RZ/T2 and RZ/N2 series microprocessors for real time control and industrial networking.
The RZ/T2 and RZ/N2 are based on the ARM Cortex-R52 real time core for applications such as servo motor control and EtherCAT slave interfaces and three port time sensitive (TSN) Ethernet controller blocks for deterministic control networks.

The R52 support in IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM v9.30 provides comprehensive debugging capabilities, including multi-core debugging, for development of application software for dual core RZ/T2M, the first RZ/T2 series product (above).
IAR Systems offers a functional safety edition certified by TÜV SÜD, meeting IEC 61508 requirements. Using this edition, Renesas plans to release the RZ/T2M later this year and the RZ/N2L, which was announced in August this year, in 2023 for functional safety solutions. These include Certified Self-Test Software for self-fault diagnosis and a SIL3 System Software Kit, including mandatory cross-diagnosis for redundant microcontroller configurations.
IAR’s integrated static code analysis tools comply with coding standards such as MISRA-C and CERT for modern functional safety development in terms of IEC61508 and other security standards.
“RZ/T2M and RZ/N2L customers now can use IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm, a high-performance integrated development environment. This enables the RZ/T2M and RZ/N2L to deliver high-speed, high-precision, real-time motor control and the latest industrial network communication capabilities. The upcoming “Certified Self-Test Software,” said Hitoshi Shirakabe, Vice President of the Industrial Automation Business Division at Renesas.
“The SIL3 System Software Kit for functional safety has been developed using IAR Embedded Workbench. When used with the certified functional safety edition of the tool, customers can significantly reduce the time and workload associated with development.”
“Smart motor controllers and highspeed networking are two essential building blocks to create the future of manufacturing,” said Anders Holmberg, CTO at IAR Systems. “IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM is the leading software development environment in the industrial control segment and is certified for use with all relevant safety standards. Our long and deep collaboration with Renesas has enabled many innovative solutions across the industrial control market. Supporting the RZ/T2 and RZ/N2 series of devices is a logical step on our mutual journey.”
