IAV develops modular platform for battery electric vehicles
“Platforms are a key to mastering variant diversity and to reducing development time and, in particular, product costs through economies of scale,” says Erik Schneider, Head of E-Traction & Hybrid Drivetrain at IAV. The e-drivetrain platform developed by Berlin-based IAV enables a wide variety of variants for all vehicle segments and their drive topologies thanks to the combination of scalable and modular systems, such as battery and e-machine.
The platform covers a power spectrum from 100 to 440 kW, battery capacities from 27 to 115 kWh and voltage levels of 400 and 800 volts. It enables the use of both silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) power arresters. In addition, there are numerous additional functions, such as all-wheel drive and torque vectoring to increase driving dynamics.
In total, IAV has virtually generated and evaluated around 24 million technically feasible powertrain variants. In the process, simulation tools such as IAV’s powertrain synthesis were used to systematically vary and combine the main systems of battery, e-machine, inverter and transmission.
IAV places particular emphasis on the issue of sustainability. Based on a full life cycle analysis, IAV has developed a special eco-design for the battery platform. This is a resource-saving solution that helps to ensure that less CO2 is emitted in battery production than in the manufacture of classic electricity storage systems thanks to better material selection, connection technology, disassembly and recycling.
IAV is already using the e-drive train platform in various projects with customers who are either interested in subsystems or require solutions for complete e-drive trains.
