During the development of these ICs, the focus was placed on an optimal range coverage. Thus, the redesigned signal processing allows distance measurements between 10 and 600cm. With optimized system hardware and under favorable ambient conditions, even greater distances are possible. Other features such as STC (gain modification via Sensitivity Time Control), ATG (Automatic Threshold Generation), NFTG (Near Field Threshold Generation), and the FTC algorithm allow further customization and optimization as required by the customer’s application. The new EPD (Echo Peak Detection) significantly increases the accuracy of the distance measurement.

Commissioning is very simple. Many configurations can be set quickly via the communication interface. It is not necessary to develop software for transducer control and the evaluation of the received signal. All these functions already covered by the IC hardware. To be able to react flexibly to customer applications, the optimized IO interface offers up to three configurable measuring ranges, which can be set for a near, medium and long range, for example. A changeover can take place from measurement to measurement and can thus significantly reduce reaction times in the system.

Numerous diagnostics options, such as monitoring of supply voltages, temperature sensor, detection of communication errors, measurement of decay time and frequency deviation, ensure reliable sensor operation.

Application-relevant settings can be stored in the integrated EEPROM with an end-of-line calibration by the customer. For evaluation and debugging purposes envelope and threshold curves can be read digitally or analogously.

Communication with the control unit is possible via a two- or three-wire version. The two-wire version (E524.08) provides bidirectional communication via a data modulation on the supply line. The three-wire version (E524.09) has a dedicated IO line for data transmission.
