IEEE celebrates 100 years of the Power & Energy Society Transformers committee
The predecessor to the IEEE PES Transformers Committee was launched in 1918 under the auspices of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) Committee of Standardization, created in 1899 to recommend standard practices and definitions for electrical apparatus.
With over 100 published standards, the PES Transformers Committee has helped power generation, transmission and distribution technologies evolve, becoming essential for the transmission, distribution and use of alternating current electrical energy. They have a vital role in current power systems. The first standalone standard attributed to the committee was published in 1925 entitled: AIEE Transformer Standard 13-1925—Standard for Transformers, Induction Regulators and Reactors.
“When looking at the IEEE PES Transformers Committee today, we recognize that it is a result of the past and present work of many dedicated and diverse volunteers,” said Susan McNelly, chair of the IEEE PES Transformers Committee. “As we look forward to the next 100 years, our Committee will continue to face challenges in our efforts to keep up with and recognize technological advances in our industry and how best to coordinate and harmonize these efforts with other standards organizations around the world.”
To date, IEEE PES has been responsible for the publication of 581 of the IEEE’s 1,267 active standards, with 104 standards resulting from Project Authorization Requests (PARs) created by The IEEE PES Transformers Committee. Additionally, the IEEE, through the IEEE PES, the IEEE PES Transformers Committee, and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), works collaboratively with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), resulting in the publication of joint global standards.
Work is currently underway on two new joint IEEE/IEC technical standards, as well as a revision to the existing IEEE C57.15/IEC 60076-21—Power Transformers Part 21: Standard Requirements, Terminology, and Test Code for Step-Voltage Regulators. Currently, the IEEE-SA has 652 active PARs—283 under the IEEE PES that includes 51 from the IEEE PES Transformers Committee.

The “More Power to the Future” initiative has established a framework for advancing standards leadership, education in the workforce, and global participation, while staying abreast of industry activity trends and actively participating in regulatory initiatives.
