Imagination strengthens its position in digital radio IP
In a new deal for Imagination, ST has licensed Ensigma communications processor technology for use in a multi-standard programmable radio solution targeted at car radios that will support a wide range of global digital radio standards including DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) and HD Radio.
"Imagination and our partners have been instrumental in delivering global solutions that have made digital radio a successful technology in the home, but there has been slow progress to date in automotive," said Sir Hossein Yossaie, CEO of Imagination. "STMicroelectronics will deliver a complete solution with wide capability and ease of deployment that should propel digital radio to ubiquity in cars.”
Under the terms of its licensing arrangements Imagination receives license fees, and royalty revenues on shipment of SoCs incorporating Imagination’s IP.
Frontier, part of the Toumaz Group, is using Imagination’s Ensigma global digital radio platform in the fourth generation of its multi-standard programmable radio ICs, Chorus 4 that supports all key global digital radio standards, as well as supporting legacy analogue radio standards.
As a result of the partnership, digital radio functions are now found in all categories of consumer audio products – including portables, home audio systems, radio recorders, clock radios and automotive aftermarket products – from brands including Bang & Olufsen, Bose, Bush, Denon, harman/kardon, Hitachi, JVC, NAD, Onkyo, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Pure, Roberts, Sanyo, Sharp, Sony, TEAC, TechniSat, Tivoli Audio and Yamaha.
