Industrial robotic arm controlled over 5G network

This proof-of-concept demonstration used the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X50 5G modem from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.,and Keysight’s 5G network emulation solution to control NAVER’s AMBIDEX industrial robotic arm. 5G networks will revolutionise IIoT to support reduced latencies, higher reliability, and a greater number of connected devices. The third-generation partnership project (3GPP) will include support for 5G NR ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) features and capabilities in its Release 16, enabling mobile operators and enterprises to address a diverse range of high-performance industrial use-cases.

“This demonstration, which paves the way for commercialising 5G-based industrial IoT in the near future, is another positive outcome of our over three-year-long close collaboration with Keysight to accelerate the development of 5G technologies,” said Jeffery Torrance, vice president, business development at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “We have collectively achieved several significant industry milestones, including the successful demonstration of a 3GPP 5G NR standalone (SA) mode IP data transfer. This demonstration used Keysight’s 5G network emulation solutions and a mobile smartphone form-factor test device consisting of a 5G modem and antenna modules from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., announced in December last year.”

Keysight’s 5G network emulation solution leverages Keysight’s UXM 5G Wireless Test Platform (pictured above), to support device validation across protocol, radio frequency (RF) and radio resource management (RRM) in both low band and mmWave spectrum.
