Contract manufacturer Flex has signed a preferred automotive design partner deal with Infineon Technologies as part of the development of a modular zone controller as part of the push to software defined vehicle (SDV) architectures.
The FC-Flex, shown at the CES Consumer Electronics Show next week, has a modular microcontroller (MCU) architecture and common hardware building blocks. This allows Tier One customers of Flex to develop a range of zone controllers with differing performance levels.
Flex has over 100 automotive customers including Ford and Nexteer, owned by Pacific Century Motors, while Infineon is working with leading OEMs and Tier One suppliers on zone controller designs.
The Flex Modular Zone Controller platform is an automotive-grade reference design for rapid zone controller unit (ZCU) implementation. The design uses an optimized Aurix TC4x chipset with Hardware Data Accelerators (Date Routing Engine/CAN Routing Engine), sequential diagnostics, I²T protection and SPI control, enabling early performance optimization.
The implementation is agnostic to the type of zone control, and integrates with the power distribution and actuation functions. It combines the newly launched Aurix TC4x microcontroller with PROFET power switches, MOTIX motor control ICs for the actuators and OPTIREG voltage regulators for the power supply.
“As software-defined vehicles pave the way for next-generation mobility, the automotive industry must embrace partnerships that empower automakers to move faster and focus their resources on creating brand-defining experiences through software,” said Mike Thoeny, President, Automotive, Flex.
“Flex’s collaboration with Infineon on advanced compute platforms exemplifies how deep ecosystem partnerships can enable automakers to launch software-defined vehicles with greater resilience and speed.”
The Flex Modular Zone controller platform will be available to customers in 2025.
