Infineon & imec collaborate on 79 GHz CMOS radar sensor
imec contributes expertise in HF system, circuit and antenna design for radar applications, and Infineon its pre-existing radar sensor chip experience. With a view to eventual use in automated cars, the partners say that a demonstrator in 28-nm CMOS is in hand; functional sensor samples are anticipated for the third quarter of 2016, and a complete radar demonstrator early in 2017. imec points out that even in today’s cars with ADAS functions, there are typically three radars; the future fully automated car may have ten radars and ten further sensor (video/lidar) sensor systems.
An Infineon spokesman said that in future, radar sensor chips will be fabricated as a single-chip product in a classic CMOS process, for specific functions such as automated parking. imec adds that the work at 77 and 79 GHz, superseding 24 GHz, will yield radar prototypes with integrated MIMO antennae that will detect not only large objects, but also pedestrians and cyclists.
