Infineon is moving the growing microphone market
Knowles and Goertek are the market leaders in MEMS microphones with market share of 39 and 28 percent respectively in 2018, the market researcher estimates. However, Infineon is changing the landscape for MEMS microphones.
Infineon Technologies AG has traditionally supplied MEMS microphone die to microphone assemblers such as Goertek and AAC Technologies. However, Infineon has begun to sell complete MEMS microphones in competition.
This may in turn cause Goertek and AAC to seek out alternative suppliers of MEMS microphone die.
Reasons Infineon may be re-organizing its approach to audio are: the growing size of the market, its closer alignment to digital processing and increased added value in the MEMS element of the microphone. In addition, Infineon has introduced superior technology in the form of the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) sealed dual-membrane MEMS microphone (see Sealed dual membrane to raise MEMS microphones SNR).
Infineon has supplied Goertek with the sealed dual-membrane MEMS microphone for Apple’s AirPods Pro.
The consumer MEMS microphone market is expected to be worth $1.6 billion in 2024, up from $1.2 billion in 2018.
For audio codecs and amplifiers, Cirrus Logic is the market leader but is dependent on Apple. In this sub-market, worth $3.4 billion in 2018, the leaders are Cirrus Logic, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments with 35, 18, and 12 percent of the market, respectively.
Yole asserts that artificial intelligence is set to be a key part of the audio sound chain. This part of the market will probably fall to application processor developers Apple, Qualcomm and HiSilicon.
