At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Infineon and Baidu announced their partnership: Infineon will join Baidu’s Apollo program. Baidu contributes its expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous driving to the partnership, while Infineon contributes its expertise in automotive electronics. In this way, the partners want to work together to advance the progress of intelligent cars.

Infineon is thus following its competitors NXP and ON Semiconductor, who announced similar cooperation agreements with Baidu in the run-up to CES.

Since the launch of the Apollo Autonomous Driving Platform in 2017, Baidu has created a strong technological framework and ecosystem for this purpose. The spectrum of its technological building blocks ranges from cloud services and open source software to reference hardware and vehicle platforms. Around 100 expert companies from across the industry have joined the program and contributed their specific knowledge. Infineon contributes automotive key products and applications to the Apollo hardware platform, such as microcontrollers, radar and Lidar sensor chips, information security and functional security. These are also the two partners’ central fields of cooperation.

By combining security and performance, Infineon offers the scalable 32-bit Aurix family of real-time microcontrollers for safety-related sensor applications, domain and centralized gateway controllers, and sensor fusion applications. The company also offers sensor chips for radar, Lidar and camera systems. With actuators in mind, Infineon covers key features for ADAS and autonomous driving, including transmission, engine, brake, chassis and steering.

“Baidu’s Apollo ecosystem is thoughtful, far-sighted and practical. It covers all areas of autonomous driving, from ICs to cloud-based big data,” said Helen Xu, Vice President of Infineon China and Head of the Automotive Division for Infineon China Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. “The program offers developers an open source platform in a cooperative and open model.”

The Apollo Autonomous Driving Platform is intended to provide the participating partners with an open, reliable and secure software platform for the development of their own autonomous driving systems. For this purpose, it offers in-vehicle and hardware-based platforms.
