Infineon launches R&D center for AI, automotive electronics

By Christoph Hammerschmidt

Infineon has set up 30 new office workplaces and is currently setting up a development laboratory. Starting next spring, the company will create space for a further 70 workplaces. In the medium term, the development center will employ a total of around 250 people. In this context, the development center is looking for specialists for chip design, system architecture, AI systems and software development.

“Less CO2 and more safety in road traffic are, in addition to increasing networking and IT security, the major goals of the automotive industry – and at the same time growth drivers for our business,” says Peter Schiefer, head of Infineon’s Automotive Division. Not least because of increasing demands on safety and environmental compatibility, future car generations will need more and more sensors, microcontrollers and power semiconductors. “In Dresden, where Infineon manufactures these products, development, design and production come together,” S chiefery said.

Digitization and networking are also driving growth in other markets. Artificial Intelligence enables self-learning machines with the perspective of, for example, new interfaces for communication through speech recognition. Such systems require increasingly sophisticated semiconductor solutions. This is why Infineon’s Power Management & Multimarket division is also participating in the new development center.

The central development department “Design Enabling & Services” (DES) will also be represented in the new development center in Dresden. DES supports Infineon’s business units in product development and provides design environments for the teams. DES’ development services cover the complete chip design process.
