Intel breaks ground on $20 billion fab investment
When the fabs come into production in 2024 they will run Intel’s 20A (20 angstrom, 2nm) manufacturing process (see Intel renames manufacturing nodes, tips RibbonFET, PowerVia).
The two fabs will bring the total on the campus to six and will support both the production of Intel products but also the firm’s renewed aspirations in foundry production.
The project is expected to have a total cost of $20 billion and will create 3,000 Intel jobs and about 15,000 additional indirect jobs across Arizona.
“This $20 billion expansion will bring our total investment in Arizona to more than $50 billion since opening the site over 40 years ago. As the only US-based leading-edge chipmaker, we are committed to building on this long-term investment and helping the United States regain semiconductor leadership,” said Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel, in a statement.
“With Intel Foundry Services, Intel is opening its fab doors wide to serve the needs of foundry customers around the globe – many of whom are looking for more geographical balance in the semiconductor supply chain,” said Rhandir Thakur, president of Intel Foundry Services, in the same statement.
