Intel cancels its developer forum

The website for Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, normally be expected to take place in August or September, states Intel has “decided to retire the IDF program moving forward. Thank you for nearly 20 great years with the Intel Developer Forum!”

The event has also gone to Shenzhen, China in April for the last three years but no explanation was given as to why it was no longer appropriate. The website states that if you want support you can get it from the Internet at www.intel.com. The indication would appear to be that Intel is eager not to be seen as a semiconductor company but rather as data-centric equipment and service company similar to an Apple, Google or Amazon.

Prior to the first IDF electronics and semiconductor companies attended independently organized exhibitions and conferences with the idea that by coming together the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. But Intel’s dominance of the PC market, then the volume market for semiconductors, led to the argument that Intel was the draw bringing visitors to an exhibition and that other companies were piggybacking on its prestige.

Intel decided to do its own event in 1997 although it continued to exhibit at some others. This also prompted a number of other companies to try and follow Intel’s lead and stage their own annual events while reducing involvement elsewhere: ARM, TSMC and Cadence being three.

Intel’s withdrawal leaves ARM Techcon as the leading single-company oriented technology event. ARM Techcon 2017 is expected to take place in the Santa Clara Convention Center October 22 to 24, 2017. The IMEC Technology Forum organized by Europen research institute IMEC takes place May 16 and 17 in Antwerp, Belgium.
