Intel extends lead as top chip supplier
While Samsung was ranked number one for the full years of 2017 and 2018, Intel is forecast to recapture the number one position for the full-year of 2019. Samsung had 23 percent total sales than Intel in 1Q18 and due to the collapse of DRAM and NAND flash memory components Intel had 23 percent more sales than Samsung in 1Q19.
Total semiconductor sales in 1Q19 declined by 16 percent compared to 1Q18.

There were two new entrants into the top-15 ranking in 1Q19, HiSilicon and Sony.
China’s HiSilicon jumped up 11 spots in the ranking to 14th place on the back of a 41 percent surge in year-over-year sales in 1Q19 which it made partly from servicing Huawei’s surge in mobile phone sales. Sony also posted a solid year-over-year sales increase of 14 percent in 1Q19. Sony in turn is an exclusive supplier of image sensors to Huawei as well as being designed into particular products in many other pieces of mobile electronics.
The top-15 ranking includes one pure-play foundry (TSMC) and four fabless companies. If TSMC were excluded from the top-15 ranking, Taiwan-based fabless supplier MediaTek ($1.71 billion) would have been ranked in the 15th position.
IC Insights includes foundries in the top-15 semiconductor supplier ranking since it has always viewed the ranking as a top supplier list, not a marketshare ranking, and realizes that in some cases the semiconductor sales are double counted.
