Intel launches SSD based on 3D XPoint memory
The unit has a memory capacity of 375Gbytes and a memory latency of less than 10 microseconds.
Although Intel has never been plain about the matter 3D XPoint is thought by observers to be a re-introduction of chalcogenide phase-change memory. This memory has been researched extensively for 50 years and was brought to market by Micron in 2012 in a 45nm manufacturing process.
However, despite having both serial and parallel versions of PCM in product form Micron failed to get traction and retired the products in 2014. Intel claims the SSDs have high throughput and low latency compared with NAND-based SSDs.
The SSD is available now and additional capacities and form factors will be available in 2H17, Intel said.
