The global market for tablet computer applications processors grew by 23 percent year-on-year to reach $945 million in 2Q14, the firm said. For comparison the smartphone application processor market grew 22 percent year-on-year growth to reach $5.2 billion in 2Q14 (see )

Apple maintained its leading position and market share at 26 percent followed by Intel with 19 percent and Qualcomm with 17 percent. Behind them in 2Q14 came MediaTek and Samsung. This gives Intel the leading position in non-iPad tablet computers. Strategy Analytics said this position is a difficult one to maintain and that six companies have held it at various times.

"The non-Apple tablet AP market leadership position continues to change hands and during Q2 2014 it was Intel’s turn," said Sravan Kundojjala, senior analyst, in a statement issued by Strategy Analytics. He added that Intel is a on course to achieve its 40 million tablet AP shipment goal in 2014.

However, there is plenty of competition bubbling up. HiSilicon, Marvell, MediaTek, Nvidia and Qualcomm all registered significant shipment growth in the tablet AP market, according to Stuart Robinson, director of the handset component technologies service at Strategy Analytics. He added that Nvidia is positioned to grab high-profile tablet design-wins with its 64-bit Tegra K1 chip in the second half of 2014.
