Lip-Bu Tan, CEO of struggling chip company Intel, has made management changes aimed at increasing agility and speed of execution within the company, according to a Reuters report that referenced a memo written by Tan.
Tan has appointed Sachin Katti as chief technology and AI officer and has said that Intel’s data center and AI chip group, as well as its personal-computer chip group, will report directly to him. The memo said that Michelle Johnston Holthaus, who previously oversaw those groups, remains as chief executive of Intel Products but will take on responsibilities in other areas.
The changes will also let senior technical managers interface directly with Tan without going through layers of business managers.
“I want to roll up my sleeves with the engineering and product teams so I can learn what’s needed to strengthen our solutions,” the report quoted Tan saying in the memo. “As Michelle and I drive this work, we plan to evolve and expand her role with more details to come in the future.”
The promotion of Katti and the taking on of direct reports by Tan appear to target problems that Tan saw when he was a non-executive director on the board of directors at Intel in 2024.
Tan resigned from the board in August 2024 after differences with the then CEO Pat Gelsinger. At the time it was reported that Tan considered Intel to have a bloated workforce, a risk-averse culture and lack an up-to-date strategy on artificial intelligence. Gelsinger was subsequently ousted at the end of 2024 and Tan then invited back to the lead the company.
Tan is also reported saying in the memo: “It’s clear to me that organizational complexity and bureaucratic processes have been slowly suffocating the culture of innovation we need to win. It takes too long to make decisions. New ideas are not given room or resources to incubate. And unnecessary silos lead to inefficient execution.”
