Intel targets smartglasses with purchase of two Swiss startups
Both companies are spin offs from from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and in both cases the purchase price has not been disclosed.
Lemoptix technology is suitable for use in printers, microprojectors and displays and the transaction was completed on March 17, 2015, according to a note on the company website. The company was formed in 2008 and applications of its technology range from head up displays to embedded projectors for smartphones and 3D sensing for 3D printing.
Lemoptix had been working with Composyt Light Labs SA when the latter was acquired by Intel at the end of 2014. Composyt was founded in 2014 to commercialize a see-through display architecture invented at EPFL. The display integrates with normal eyewear and a smartglasses prototype developed by Composyt and Lemoptix includes direct retina projection and a patented holographic combiner.
