The microphone has a redesigned MEMS membrane and a signal-conditioning amplifier and achieves a signal-to-noise ratio of 70dB. The current consumption is 160-microamps and the unit is packaged in plastic block measuring 4mm by 3mm by 1.2mm. It is intended for use in consumer electronics from smartphones and upwards in complexity.

"Achieving 70dB SNR is a technological breakthrough for MEMS based microphones," said Ali Foughi, vice president of marketing and business development at InvenSense, in a statement.

The company has also announced it is sampling the ICS-40160 analog microphone and ICS-40310 low-current microphone to select customers.

The ICS-40160 draws 50 microamps in a low-power mode while providing 65dB SNR in high-performance mode. The ICS-40310 consumes 17-microamps while providing a SNR performance of 64dB. These two microphones are described as being suitable for "always-on" operation used in keyword detection. Again only selected customers are allowed to receive samples.
