Inversed OLED shows stability without encapsulation barrier
Using the same iOLED technology and a film substrate, the company had prototyped a full-color display in 2015 which it showcased a year later at Open House 2016, fully operational after a year of continuous use without sealing. The red iOLED device from NHK STRL relies on a new organic material and additives for the electron injection layer, lowering the driving voltage to 3.7V, taking internal efficiency to 100% and increasing the emission lifetime to over 10,000 hours while unsealed.
“This is the world’s first OLED device that has a long service life, high energy-saving capability (because of the low driving voltage) and resistance to oxygen and moisture,” quotes the Nikkei Technology website from NHK. Strong of these promising results, the NHK STRL lab plans to accelerate the development of green and blue iOLED devices with the same stability in air.
