Production has been assessed by the customer and its end-OEM customer with qualification of further tools expected to complete over the coming months. Further product qualifications with more than ten other customers are at advanced stages, IQE said in a statement.

The Newport Mega Foundry has been under construction for the last 18 months and has ten MOCVD production tools installed, with space for up to an additional 90 tools. The first ten tools are dedicated to VCSEL production for end applications that include 3D sensing, datacommunications, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), lidar, proximity sensing and Time of Flight (ToF) systems.

The company has previously said that its new technologies portfolio, including GaN-on-silicon, nano-imprint lithography (NIL), crystalline rare earth oxide (cREO), and quasiphotonic crystals (QPC), is gaining engagement with customers around the globe for a variety of applications.
