The production is the result of six years of research and development and marks a key milestone for industrial production, with an initial capacity of more than 10 million components per year and the possibility of a fivefold increase within a few months.

“We are delighted to inaugurate this first production site today, which constitutes an important step in implementing our strategy,” said Fabien Gaben, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Iten. “It is the starting point of a new phase, driven by the ambition for advancement and growth in extremely demanding markets. ITEN will bring all its expertise to meet the integration and performance  requirements of the electronics industry.”

The solid-state lithium-ion microbatteries are manufactured by stacking electrodes only a few microns thick and as surface mounted devices (SMD) are compatible with automated manufacturing processes.

The microbatteries can be used in autonomous sensors, smart cards, electronic circuit security functions, watchmaking and bio-electronics and charge in less than three minutes. The global micro-battery market potential is higher than 3 billion components per year. The ramp-up of production thorugh 2019 will enable the company to double its workforce by mid-2020.

The company has seen backing of over €10m from investors such as the Eren Group (SBGFI), Habert Dassault Finance, and the funds managed by Demeter Partners, Innovacom, and Kreaxi, as well as financial support from Bpifrance.
