JMA Wireless compression connectors ensure mobile comms in 2.3 km tunnel
Built to relieve traffic congestion, the tunnel is comprised of four stacked tunnel tubes, with two above and two below. In addition, a multi-lane roadway, pedestrian paths and greenery lies above it. Tunnel environments have an increased level of vibration and environmental conditions that can easily result in degraded performance at the connection points to the equipment. To ensure the wireless network is resilient to these factors, system integrator, VolkerWessels Telecom (VWT), turned to JMA Wireless for the industry’s most resilient compression connector technology. It was deployed across hundreds of connection points in radio transmission lines throughout this distinctive 2.3-kilometer tunnel located in the city of Maastricht in the Netherlands.
VWT selected JMA Wireless’ patented compression connector technology to ensure superior connectivity throughout the tunnel system for four mobile operators (KPN, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Tele2) four bands (800, 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz), and six sectors.
Even excessive levels of vibration caused by the high amount of daily traffic in the King Willem-Alexander Tunnel has not affected the dependability of the JMA Wireless compression connectors.
“Our compression connectors are commonly selected over alternative solutions because of their performance consistency and resiliency to the elements, such as airborne particles and moisture, that affect a wireless network’s performance,” stated Todd Landry, Corporate Vice President of Product and Market Strategy at JMA Wireless. “These issues can cause PIM (passive intermodulation), which negatively impacts a wireless network. Our connectors are 100 percent PIM optimized, resulting in powerful cellular communications.”
In addition to being PIM optimized, the JMA Wireless connectors are easier to install than competitive offerings, allowing the VWT team to complete the installation in a short eight-week timeframe. JMA Wireless compression connectors are a universal one piece system, including both the mating interface and the cable attachment, that utilize standard tools for installation. Valuable time in the field was not spent assembling piece parts. Finally, the cold winter temperatures were not an issue either since the connectors can be installed and serviced in virtually any temperature, from –40° C to +85° C.
