According to local reports 153 jobs are to go at the site out of a total of about 700. The job losses are expected to affect 80 workers in production, 36 technical and 37 managerial positions.
The goal is for the departures to be voluntary but it is thought that some will be compulsory. Varmatin, a local online publication quoted a representative of the Confederation Francaise Democratique du Travail (CFDT) saying that about 80 voluntary redundancies might be found but that the remaining 73 job losses would be forced. The news is expected by Christmas, the report said.
Lfoundry started out in Landshut, Germany, and closed its first wafer fab there in 2011 after it failed to find sales to replace legacy commitments from the original owner of the fab.
The Rousset wafer fab makes chips on 200-mm diameter wafers in a clean room of about 12,000 square meters. It has a manufacturing capacity of about 25,000 wafer starts per month, according to data provided by the company in 2011. In July 2013 Lfoundry Rousset was placed under administration due to a sudden reduction of Atmel’s production requirements, according to reports. A Paris court ruled that their should be a six-month period to help develop a continuation plan for the business, the reports said.
However, earlier this year Lfoundry entered into an agreement to acquire Micron Technology Italia, Srl. and all of its semiconductor fabrication facility assets in Avezzano, Italy.
In June it was announced that acquisition would be undertaken by way of a 50:50 joint venture between LFoundry Europe and Marsica Innovation SpA, the company owned by the Italian management. "I’m happy entering into the joint venture. I’m convinced that this is the right direction to develop further LFoundry and Avezzano site," said LFoundry CEO and COO Guenther Ernst, at the time.
The acquisition of Micron’s Avezzano wafer fab was intended to expand Lfoundry’s presence as an analog and mixed-signal foundry in Europe.
Lfoundry did not respond to a request for comment by the time this story was posted.
