Koito, Blickfeld plan to integrate lidar into headlamp

Blickfeld, founded in 2017, has developed a lidar technology that uses silicon-based MEMS mirrors. The company has obtained a patent for this technology; beyond this, Blickfeld is using commercial off-the-shelf products for its lidar sensors to keep the costs low. Due a range of configurable features, the Blickfeld lidar product family provides solutions for multiple use cases. 

The company’s lidar sensors are so compact that they fit into a headlamp. This is where Koito steps in: In the course of further developing its technology, Koito intends to take up a number of relevant techniques for use in automated driving modes, including lidar.

The collaboration of lighting and lidar technologies will yield a high-end automotive component with built in lidar sensor which are expected to function interactively with Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) or autonomous driving technology. The lidar sensor thus is enabling real-time 3D mapping and object detection, classification, and tracking without protruding or altering the exterior design of the vehicle, Koito stated in a press release
