LCD-based light-field display demonstrated

Through collaborative research, the two companies developed a 17.0-inch light field display based on an 8K LCD from JDI and relying on high-definition, next-generation 3D image processing from NHK Media Technology.

The light field display was then exhibited during Display Week. According to a recent report from Nikkei Technology, the 8k LCD panel featured a low-temperature polycrystalline Si (LTPS) TFT backplane and was run in In Plane Switching mode. Screen resolution and angle range reported for the 3D viewing experience were 176ppi and 130º, respectively.

Assuming a 7680×4320 resolution for the 17 inch diagonal 8K LCD, that makes roughly a 450ppi native resolution for the 2D display whose pixels must have been clustered in some manner under a micro-lenticular array film or nanogratings for the light field implementation (though JDI wouldn’t reveal the trick they use).
