LED backlighting becomes prevalent TV technology
According to the IC Insights Market Drivers report, which will be released soon, the move towards LED backlit TVs is driven by several factors. These TV sets are rapidly gaining favor among customers because they tend to offer broader color range, better contrast ratio, and lower power consumption. In addition, LED-backlit TVs are lasting much longer, says IC Insights vice president Brian Matas: They offer more than 100.000 operating hours compared to traditional cold cathode fluorescent lamp TVs which are typically rated at 20.000 operating hours.
The report predicts an explosive growth for LED-backlit TVs in terms of units. While in 2009, this type of device accounted for just 3 million units, a small percentage in a global market of more than 200 million units, this number increased by more than a factor of ten to 35 million in 2010. In 2011, the number will double again to about 87 million units. For 2012, the market researchers expect 132 million units.
During the same time frame, LED backlit TVs will increase their market share from 1,5% to 53 percent of the total market. The growth of LED backlit TVs is mostly at the expense of CCFL-backlit devices — their market share will plunge in the same time from around 65% in 2009 to 34% in 2012.
