LED industry group ISELED continues to grow
Founded in 1947, OLSA is a provider of development and manufacturing of lighting products for the automotive industry. The company is based in Rivoli (Italy) and is directly represented in seven countries. OLSA supplies automotive manufacturers in Europe, America and Asia; through its subsidiary OLSA Parts SrL it also serves the automotive aftermarket. OLSA was recently taken over by the automotive supplier Magna. Now the company intends to contribute innovative solutions to the automotive interior lighting universe. In addition to OLSA, Inova Semiconductors, Dominant Opto Technologies, Lucie Labs, NXP, TE Connectivity, the University of Pforzheim and Valeo have already belonged to the alliance.
The ISELED alliance aims to create an ecosystem with the appropriate hardware and software around the ISELED concept. The key product is an intelligent LED driver from Inova Semiconductors, which is manufactured together with three RGB LEDs in a small housing by Dominant Opto. This innovative approach enables car manufacturers to reduce costs, simplify control and significantly expand the possibilities of LED lighting in automobiles.
The new generation of automotive interior lighting uses hundreds of LEDs, typically arranged in strips of up to 30 LEDs or more. In the ISELED concept, each of the “digital LEDs” consists of a red, green and blue LED, which are integrated in a housing together with a controller. A total of up to 4079 of these digital LEDs can be arranged over a differential 2-wire bus with a data rate of 2 Mbit/s and controlled by an external controller such as NXP’s S32K series.
This eliminates the need for the otherwise cumbersome and expensive implementation with multiple microcontrollers and the relatively slow LIN bus. With the application software of alliance member Lucie Labs, for example, fascinating lighting effects can be created and easily controlled via an app on the smartphone.
