Leti photonics startup raises $4.4 million

Scintil Photonics is a fabless company that combines silicon and indium phosphide (InP) materials using wafer-scale bonding of InP-on-Si. It uses these processes in foundries to produce integrated photonic circuits that can comprise multi-wavelength lasers, waveguides, wavelength filters and photodetectors.

The company was founded in November 2018 by CEO Sylvie Menezo, previously with CEA-Leti, and chairman Pascal Langlois, former CEO of Tronics Microsystems (see TDK bids to buy MEMS maker Tronics).

The money raised will be used to develop prototypes of 800Gbit/s photonic transceivers for sampling to strategic customers in the data center market. The money will also be used to strengthen development partnerships with CEA-Leti in France and the University of Toronto in Canada.

Scintil’s technology draws on more than 15 years research on lasers, silicon photonics and 3D packaging conducted at CEA-Leti. Scintil allows integration of multi-wavelength lasers with silicon photonics and reduces cost by avoiding several packaging steps, the company asserts. Applications include high-speed data transmission and lidar.

Supernova Invest, Innovacom and Bpifrance are lead investors on the round. They were joined by Credit Agricole Alpes Développement and endowment Fund Foreis.
