These include 3D logic ICs and non-volatile memory, neuromorphic processor architectures, spintronics and ultra-low power semiconductors.

KIST (Seoul, South Korea) encompasses about 2,600 scientists, visiting scientists, fellows and trainees. KIST Europe in Saarbruecken, Germany was established in 1996.

It is not yet clear how the collaboration will work or the level of commitment each side will make. A spokesperson said that so far Leti and KIST have only defined common topics of interest. The next steps will be: to commit on selected topics, to define complementary work plans that can dovetail together and to define how many scientists from each side will be involved, the spokesperson added.

“The Post-Silicon Semiconductor Institute (PSI) of KIST is playing a key role in semiconductor R&D in Korea. With this agreement, KIST and Leti will strengthen the collaborative relationship to achieve global leadership in the field of semiconductors,” said Byung Gwon Lee, president of KIST, in a statement.
