LG Innotek claims world’s first automotive WiFi 6E module
Wi-Fi 6E modules are wireless short-range communication components that connect in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems that control driving information and multimedia content with internal smart devices and external routers. With next-generation Wi-Fi 6E (6th Generation Extended) technology using a bandwidth of 6 GHz, the module offers data transmission speeds that are about three times faster than the existing Wi-Fi 5.
The module, unveiled by LG Innotek, combines a communications chipset, radio frequency circuitry and other components in one package. The module is integrated into several components of a vehicle, including the audio-video navigation (AVN) system and a smart antenna. Passengers can use it to enjoy movies, games and more on the in-vehicle display or audio system by connecting it wirelessly to a smartphone. The module also simplifies in-car navigation system software updates and the like.
However, the WiFi 6E module presented is not yet available. The supplier expects the product to be commercialised in 2022. In particular, joint actions with Infineon Technologies, which supplies Wi-Fi 6E automotive chipsets, are planned.
According to market research institute Techno Systems Research (TSR), the demand for automotive Wi-Fi communication modules will grow by 70%, from 51.2 million units in 2020 to 87.3 million units in 2025.
