The world’s No.2 television maker, LG has been pushing OLED TVs as the next generation technology through the company’s affiliate LG Display Co Ltd for some time but this week LG Electronics Chief Financial Officer Jung Do-hyun advised analysts that the company would be "pursuing a dual-track strategy with quantum dot and OLED."

The revelation that chemical manufacturing giant Dow Chemical Co was planning to build a new quantum dot plant in South Korea points to the likelihood that both LG and Samsung would be launching quantum dot televisions in the future. Commercial production at the Dow plant is slated the first half of 2015.

LG has been promoting the benefits of OLED TV at a variety of events around the world this year.  The benefits include higher picture quality than existing LCD technology and the wider set of design opportunities OLED technology provides.

LG has launched a 65-inch OLED television this year but the set’s price tag is far higher than an equivalent LCD-based TVs.

In a price sensitive market quantum dot display TVs offer a cheaper alternative to OLED TVs.  The quantum dots are also easier to manufacture.

"At this point LG has no choice but to release quantum dot TVs to make sure it doesn’t lose ground to Samsung while OLED continues to develop," said HDC Asset Management fund manager Park Jung-hoon.
