
Light-field technology startup boosts next-gen AR efforts
Avegant is developing next-generation display technology “to enable previously impossible augmented reality experiences” for consumers. The company’s light field technology enables clear visualization of virtual objects across multiple focal planes, making virtual objects appear real at distances both near and far.
“The consumer AR industry faces significant challenges developing displays that are high resolution, small form factor, large field-of-view, light field, and low power,” says Ed Tang, CEO of Avegant. “The industry is excited about our unique solutions to these technical challenges, which will enable previously impossible AR experiences.”
Avegant has been focused on its next-generation display technologies targeted for the consumer market, but notes the technology has potential application in other markets including design, engineering, healthcare, and telecommunication. The company says its current research builds on its light field technologies and the high-resolution, low-latency, and high-brightness retinal displays first used in its video headset.
Andrew Kau, Managing Director of Walden International, one of the investors in the funding round says, “Many companies are trying to solve multiple, very difficult technical problems to bring AR experiences to consumers. We chose to invest in Avegant because their solutions elegantly tackle these problems in creative ways that consider human factors without losing sight of manufacturability.”
Last year, Avegant began shipping display development kits based on its light field technology that can be used by other companies in their augmented and mixed reality devices. The kits include software, hardware, and support services, as well as sample code for Unity and other development platforms.
Investors in the funding round included Walden SKT Venture Fund and China Walden Venture Investments III, L.P., as well as previous investors.
