A group of research companies, including Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI), The Munich Technical University, the Institute for Resource Efficiency and Energy Strategies and market researcher GfK ,scrutinized how energy consumption is structured in public and private companies in the segment of trade and services. The economic segment in question embraces a very broad range of differently structured energy consumers – from huge computer centres and office buildings to supermarkets and small and medium enterprises such as laundries, bakeries and butchers. Within the scope of the study, more than 2000 have been queried about their energy consumption, broken down into different forms of energy such as electricity, natural gas and fuel oil. The results then have been extrapolated to the German economy as a whole and they certainly would be similar in other European geographies.

The most significant result was that more than 40% of the electricity consumed in this segment were attributable to lighting. In this segment, investments into more energy-efficient equipment frequently pay off within three years. In particular, LED lighting investments offer high returns.

About 20 % of the electric energy in this segment is attributed to motors and motorized actuators, which also offer significant elbow room for optimization.
