The HMC7891 operates from 2 GHz to 18 GHz, with a high gain of 47 dB. The amplifier provides a saturated output power of +13 dBm over the input power range of −30 dBm to +10 dBm, for a limiting dynamic range of 40 dB. The amplifier can also be used as a frequency tripler due its high third harmonic output level at saturation.

An integrated voltage regulator provides proper bias voltage, drawing 300 mA from a single DC power supply of 8-V ±1-V. The HMC7891 is packaged in a compact modular design with field replaceable SMA connectors.

The HMC7891 limiting amplifier module is suitable for telecom infrastructure, test instrumentation, electronic warfare, aerospace and radar applications. One example is a radar warning receiver application, wherein the HMC7891’s constant output power would allow for more accurate frequency demodulation.

Additional key features of the HMC7891 include a noise figure of 3.5 dB and operational temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The amplifier comes in an ML-4-2 (4-lead module with connector interface) package.
