Dutch startup LionVolt has bought a battery cell production line in Thurso, Scotland, from the administrators of AMTE Power.

LionVolt announcement that it has taken on a lease at the Brainport Industries Campus (BIC), where it will construct a pilot production plant for its innovative 3D electrodes and take on 20 AMTE staff.

Based in Eindhoven, LionVolt has developed a 3D electrode architecture for next generation batteries with enhanced energy density, superior cycle-life, higher charging speed, and enhanced safety.

The BIC pilot line offers the company the ability to step up its first production capacity.

AMTE Power had ambitious plans to build a battery megafactory in Dundee, Scotland, with cell development in Thurso, but went into administration at the end of December 2023.

The acquisition of the battery production site in Scotland brings new complementary capabilities to LionVolt for the next phase of growth. The site will be repurposed to manufacture battery cells that embed LionVolt’s innovative 3D technology.

“This is a very exciting step in our growth, and brings a complementary skill set that we currently do not have within LionVolt, along with providing us with a manufacturing capability that will be complementary to our pilot line facility at the BIC. The combination of these capabilities will allow us to accelerate the commercialization of our innovative products,” said Kevin Brundish, CEO of LionVolt.

“This is a dream scenario for a deep-tech company like ours. It helps us mature our innovative 3D battery technology quicker by leveraging the manufacturing expertise from the team in Scotland, thereby reducing time-to-market,” said Sandeep Unnikrishnan, CTO of LionVolt.

“The acquisition by LionVolt presented the best opportunity to secure jobs and fulfil our statutory duties to creditors,” said Richard Bloomfield, director at FRP and joint administrator of AMTE Power.

“The transaction follows an exhaustive sales process and search for new investment. Critically, it preserves a large number of jobs and provides a continuation of battery cell manufacturing in Scotland. We wish the team at LionVolt all the best for the future.”

The deal does not include around 15 staff at the AMTE headquarters in Oxford.

“We are working with the impacted staff at the AMTE Power site in Milton and will support them in their claims to the Redundancy Payments Service,” he added.
